Our Skin

The skin is our largest organ. With an area of nearly 2 m², it envelopes our body and acts as a barrier to the outside world. In the average adult, the skin weighs around 10 kg. It protects us from harmful environmental influences such as UV radiation, mechanical stress, fluctuating temperatures or pathogens.

Our skin is also responsible for carrying out social and communicative tasks: thanks to specialized skin receptors, we are able to perceive various sensory stimuli, differentiate between hot and cold, distinguish a gentle touch from a stronger pressure or experience pain.

The skin comprises three layers:
The epidermis: has a thickness of 0.03 to 0.3 mm and contains no blood vessels. At the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, the epidermis can reach a thickness of up to 2 millimetres. The increased mechanical stress in these parts of the body leads to an increased formation of skin cells. A thicker corneal layer develops here and manifests on the outside as calluses.

The most common cells found in the epidermis are the so-called keratinocytes (corneal epithelial cells). They are formed in the lowest part of the epidermis, the basal layer, and are subsequently moved towards the outermost layer as new cells are continuously formed.
On their way to the surface of the skin they mature and change their shape before they reach the stratum disjunctum as dead corneal cells (corneocytes) after about 28 days and are shed off through desquamation.
The pigment cells (melanocytes) that are found here form melanin, which protects us from UV radiation and is responsible for the tanning of our skin.

The dermis: directly adjacent to the epidermis on the inside and has a thickness of 0.5 to 1.5 mm. It consists mainly of connective tissue and carries a dense network of blood vessels. It supplies the epidermis with oxygen and nutrients. Together with the smooth muscles, the blood vessels are responsible for regulating the body's temperature. The dermis also contains sebaceous glands, sweat glands and hair follicles. Furthermore, it contains numerous pain, thermo- and stretch receptors.

The hypodermis (subcutis): consists of fatty and connective tissues and varies in thickness between 0.5 mm and 3 cm. It is home to larger blood vessels and nerves. Special mechanoreceptors such as the lamellar or Vater-Pacini corpuscles help us to detect vibrations and strong pressure stimuli.

Very often we only realize how important our skin is for our physical and mental well-being when skin diseases occur.
