SLEEP

One of the most important life-maintaining functions is sleep. The body has only limited reserves of energy at its disposal and has to top these up when they have been exhausted. During sleep, breathing and pulse rates slow down and blood pressure and body temperature drop.
The events of the day are relived and processed, journeys are made through fantastic dream worlds, and the body and mind regenerate. Hence the overwhelming importance of healthy sleep.

Duration of sleep

For regeneration, every person needs a different amount of sleep. It is true, however, that people need less sleep as they grow older. Whereas a newborn baby sleeps for 18 hours a day on average, toddlers manage with approx. 12 hours and adolescents with 9 hours. Adults sleep on average for one third of the day. The need for sleep can fall to below 6 hours a day. People often also forget that they had an afternoon snooze and shouldn’t therefore be surprised if the subsequent night seems to be short.

SLEEP PHASES

Sleep research has made great progress in recent years. Nowadays, electroencephalography (EEG) is used to record brain activity and bodily functions and the interplay between them. 
And it has been observed that the depth of sleep is not the same during all phases. The cycle of sleep begins with the non-rapid eye movement (REM) phase. During this deep-sleep phase, body temperature and blood pressure fall, the eyes remain still, and no dreams occur. This gives way to the REM phase, so called because it is characterised by energetic eye movements.
During the REM phase, the EEG shows increased activity, dreaming is intense, and people easily wake up. Both phases alternate at regular intervals. Each ‘cycle’ lasts about 1.5 hours all told, although as the night progresses, the relative lengths of the two different phases shift so that the REM phase increases from 5 to up to 50 minutes as sleep progresses.

Nitrolingual akut® Spray – Active ingredient: glyceryl trinitrate. Composition: 1 metered dose oromucusal spray contains 0.4 mg glyceryl trinitrate. Other ingredients: medium-chain triglycerides and partial glycerides, ethanol anhydrans, peppermint oil. Indications: prophylaxis and treatment of acute attacks of angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction, acute left-ventricular heart failure, catheter-induced coronary spasms. Contraindications: hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients or other nitrate compounds, acute circulatory failure, cardiogenic shock, marked hypotension (syst BP < 90 mmHg), intake of phosphodiesterase inhibitors for the treatment of erectile dysfunction or pulmonary arterial hypertension. Caution in cases of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, constrictive pericarditis, pericardial tamponade, low filling pressures (e.g. in cases of acute MI; avoid syst BP < 90 mmHg), aortic and/or mitral stenosis, orthostatic circulatory disorders, increased intracranial pressure. During pregnancy and breast-feeding, only after careful consideration whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Side effects: headache very frequent at the start of treatment, frequent hypotension with reflex tachycardia, drowsiness, dizziness and weakness. Occasional nausea, vomiting, flush, allergic skin reactions, marked decreases in blood pressure with exacerbation of angina pectoris symptoms, bradycardia with fainting. Very rare, exfoliative dermatitis. Development of tolerance and cross tolerance possible, avoid continuous high dosing. Hypoxaemia and ischaemia may occur in CHD. GeloMyrtol® forte – Active ingredient: distillate of a mixture of rectified eucalyptus oil, rectified sweet orange oil, rectified myrtle oil and rectified lemon oil (66:32:1:1) (Myrtol® standardized). Contraindications: hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients or other nitrate compounds, acute circulatory failure, cardiogenic shock, toxic pulmonary oedema, marked hypotension (syst BP < 90 mmHg), disorders with increased intracranial pressure, intake of phosphodiesterase inhibitors for the treatment of erectile dysfunction or pulmonary arterial hypertension. Caution in cases of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, constrictive pericarditis, pericardial tamponade, low filling pressures (e.g. in cases of acute MI; avoid syst BP < 90 mmHg), aortic and/or mitral valve stenosis, tendency to orthostatic circulatory disorders, severe liver or kidney disturbances.
