When the bacteria proliferate – Sinusitis and bronchitis

If the pathogens find their way into the sinuses, the sinus membranes swell up as well and the inflamed membranes increase their production of mucus. The consequence: the openings into the nose (known technically as ostia) close up, obstructing the natural flow and release of the increased secretions. The mucous secretions are blocked and too little or no air penetrates the sinuses. When this happens, the sinuses become inflamed (sinusitis). This creates an ideal breeding ground for further bacteria which colonise the sinuses, reproduce, and eventually cause inflammation with secretions containing pus.
Provided the condition is properly treated, it clears up within a few weeks in most people. But there are people whose sinus membranes keep getting inflamed again and again, or are persistently inflamed. This is known as chronic sinusitis.

In Germany, 6.3 million people suffer each year from acute sinusitis and 2.6 million from chronic sinusitis.

HOW CAN YOU RECOGNISE
ACUTE SINUSITIS?

The typical signs of acute sinusitis generally persist for 10 to 14 days and can alternate between more and less severe phases. These include:

  • Runny nose with mucus containing pus (greenish-yellow, thick mucus)
  • Pronounced feeling of being ill
  • Feeling of pressure and headache around the cheeks and above the eyes. The pain worsens if the head is shaken or bent forward. This means that the pain is particularly severe when bending down and after getting up after lying down.
  • Possibly a slight fever.
  • Toothache associated with an unspecific feeling of pressure in the upper jaw.

Acute bronchitis

When a cold starts, the mucous membrane in the pharynx is often inflamed and swollen as well as the nose. This irritates the cough receptors in the throat resulting in a dry, irritating cough. If the pathogens also move from the upper to the lower airways, they often also cause inflammation there. Typical symptoms of bronchial inflammation (bronchitis) are painful, persistent coughing,
sometimes with expectoration containing pus, and chest pain. Here, too, the inflammation can subside and reappear again and again, and not be cured properly. This is known as chronic bronchitis.

According to estimates, 10–12% of all adults in Germany have chronic bronchitis.

HOW CAN YOU RECOGNISE
ACUTE BRONCHITIS?

  • Coughing starting on the second or third day of a cold which then intensifies and is often painful
  • Expectoration, whitish at first, then greenish-yellow (containing pus), sometimes also bloody
  • Often fever between 38° and 40°C
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Reduced ability to cope with everyday stress
  • Possibly sensation of heat behind the breast-bone (sternum)
  • Extreme weakness

It is not at all rare to find that both the upper and lower airways are infected at the same time. This is also known as a sinobronchial syndrome. This is why it is important to treat the upper and lower airways together. Effective treatment for sinusitis and bronchitis. Read more here.
