HEADLICE? NITS?

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Two important pieces of information first: only conscientious treatment will get you rid of headlice. They cannot be removed by intensive hair washing, blow drying, or household remedies such as vinegar. You can try combing them out with a louse comb providing you have a lot of time and patience. To do this, however, you will need to comb out the hair at least twice a week for four weeks, taking each strand of hair separately. The only rapid and really reliable remedy is proper treatment with a recognised delousing agent (if possible from a pharmacy). One means is a conventional head louse agent based on a classic insecticide with a neurotoxic mechanism of action. The problem with this is the growing worldwide resistance of head lice to conventional neurotoxic insecticides such as permethrin. This has turned the treatment of head lice into something of a challenge – even though there are still no firm figures on resistance for Germany. Modern head louse preparations based on dimeticon and silicon oil, such as NYDA®, have a physical mode of action. NYDA®, with its special 2-stage dimeticon, penetrates deep into the breathing system of the lice and larvae and into the breathing openings of the nits and blocks them irreversibly, thus suffocating both mature lice and their intermediate stages.

A word on the subject of ‘house cleaning’ with regard to louse infestations. Here we can sound the ‘all clear’. You do not need to use disinfectants. Wash affected clothes etc. at 60°C. Pack away any items that cannot be washed in hot water in airtight containers for two or three days to kill off the lice. Examine and treat everybody that may have been in contact with head louse carriers – this is much more important than cleaning your environment.
