LACTOBACILLI – RAPID HELP

The most important treatment for diarrhoea is rapid replacement of the electrolyte and fluid losses. Small children in particular should be treated with electrolytes in the form of electrolyte solutions obtainable from pharmacies.

At the same time, those affected should also drink large quantities of fluids. Tea, still mineral water, and weak fruit juice drinks are the best.Lactobacilli (lactic acid bacteria) also provide rapid relief from diarrhoea. They are naturally present in the intestine and perform an indispensable function helping the intestinal flora to stay healthy and resistant. However, if the intestinal membrane is damaged after an attack by diarrhoea pathogens, naturally present lactic acid bacteria achieve little and urgently need reinforcements.
These can come in the form of related species which are present in very high concentrations in special, very effective diarrhoea medications based on lactic acid bacteria (e.g. Lacteol®, available without prescription from pharmacies). One capsule or sachet of 800 mg dry powder contains approx. 10 billion lactobacilli. In powder form, they have a pleasant fruity aroma that children like and are easy to administer.

HEAT-TREATMENT AND FREEZE-DRYING

The microorganisms are inactivated and stabilised using heat-treatment for processing as a medication, and are then freeze-dried. As soon as they come into contact with a damp, warm environment, they begin to exert their protective action. The billions of lactic acid bacteria attach themselves to the intestinal membrane and coat them with a sort of biofilm.
As a result, pathogens can no longer penetrate the membrane and weaken the intestinal flora. On the contrary – the lactobacilli strengthen the immune system of the membrane and stimulate the growth of the intestinal flora. After only a few doses, the intestine recovers, and the diarrhoea stops.
